Joel Woolf is a musician, producer and film&TV composer. Working out of his own studio in Sydney, Joel combines his collection of vintage analogue gear and instruments with cutting edge digital technology to work across a variety of styles and genres and seeks to explore the nexus between electronic and acoustic sounds in his work with a focus on communicating emotion and narrative through sound and music. He is particularly interested in exploring unusual treatments of acoustic instruments; processing and manipulating the everyday sounds we are used to into something that is new while maintaining a surprising familiarity.

ABOUT

After studying music at the Australian National University, Joel spent time living in Los Angeles before returning to Sydney to immerse himself in the local music scene. He subsequently studied screen composition at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. Joel’s music has been featured in numerous artistic projects, including film, podcast, television, radio and museum installations.

Since 2019 Joel has written the music for the collaborative audio fiction podcast Jones & Woolf. Having released over 25 episodes featuring original fiction stories paired with music, the podcast has begun to experiment with more immersive formats. In 2022, Jones & Woolf were invited to perform live at the Treefort festival in Boise USA, and were awarded third place in the fiction category at the Australian Podcast Awards.

Joel collaborated with fellow composer Munro Melano to write the music for forty videos for the US online series the Visiting Room, which featured interviews with prisoners sentenced to life without parole in Angola Prison, Louisiana. The Visiting Room has been screened at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, featured in major newspapers such as the Guardian, and led to the release of several of the featured prisoners. Joel also worked as audio mixer for You Will See Me, a five screen art installation showing at Melbourne’s ACMI until 2031.

Joel has played with many bands over the years, with his music featured on radio and television, and toured nationally. He is currently a member of Hollow States. A firm believer in community, Joel has worked as audio producer for community radio station Eastside Radio 89.7fm since 2013.
